Abstract / Content summary
The Southeast Asian banana skipper, Erionota thrax Linn, became a serious pest of banana after it's entry into Papua New Guinea in 1983. Since the first sighting at Vanimo, E. thrax spread rapidly over the mainland, from coastal to over 2000 m.a.s.l. causing sporadic damage to banana leaves. A biological control program began began in August 1989, after a survey conducted in 1988 which determined the status of the banana skipper and it's natural enemies. Apanteles erionotae Wilkinson was selected as a candidate for introduction as it had been effective when introduced for biological control of E. thrax in Mauritius, Guam and Hawaii. After strict quarantine testing, releases were made. The Parasite established and is spreading from the original site of release. Outlines of proposals for the biological control of green vegetable bug, Nezara viridula F. and spiralling whitefly, Aleurodicus disperus Russ. are also discussed. [Summary]
